Stewart<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.4&#8243; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Jeffrey C. Stewart is Professor in the Department of\u00a0lack Studies at the University of California at Santa\u00a0Barbara in the United States. Oxford University Press\u00a0recently published his biography,\u00a0<strong>The New Negro:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>The Life of Alain Locke<\/strong>, which won the 2018\u00a0National Book Award for Nonfiction.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Chicago, he moved with his family at age 14\u00a0to Altadena, California, and attended John Muir High\u00a0School. He went to UCLA and UC Santa Cruz. Upon\u00a0graduation from Santa Cruz, he attended Yale\u00a0University, where he received a Ph.D. in American\u00a0Studies. He has taught at Yale, Tufts, UCLA, Scripps\u00a0College, Howard, and George Mason University before coming to UC Santa Barbara.\u00a0Jeffrey has studied the issues of race, culture, and systems of knowledge in art, history,\u00a0literature, music, and philosophy, but his enduring interest has been in African American\u00a0intellectual history. Among several honors and fellowships, Stewart was a Fulbright\u00a0Professor of American Studies at the University of Rome III in 2003, a W.E.B. Du Bois\u00a0Fellow in 2005, and a Charles Warren Fellow in American History at Harvard University\u00a0in 2011-12. In addition to his biography of Locke, Stewart is the author of several\u00a0articles, books, and exhibition catalogues, including\u00a0<strong>Paul Robeson: Artist and Citizen<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>1001 Things Everyone Should Know About African American History<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.47&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.4&#8243; text_font=&#8221;Anton||||||||&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#19819c&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;20px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>About Michele Zack<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.4&#8243; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; border_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Michele Zack is an award-winning writer, journalist,\u00a0and historian whose work has been twice recognized\u00a0by the American Society for State and Local History.\u00a0She reported for AsiaWeek and Far Eastern Economic\u00a0Review in the 1990s when residing in Thailand,\u00a0where she also wrote economic development\u00a0speeches for three prime ministers and other\u00a0officials. In California, she worked with the\u00a0Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West\u00a0writing federal grants and developing contextual\u00a0programs to link local to national history and improve\u00a0the teaching of American history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her most recent book\u00a0<strong>The Lisu: Far from the Ruler<\/strong>\u00a0brings the ironic worldview of one\u00a0of the smallest and last groups of stateless people to life through vivid, often amusing\u00a0accounts of individuals, communities, regions, and practices. The Lisu\u2019s path to national\u00a0and global citizenship illustrates the trade-offs all modern people have made, and their egalitarian culture provides insight into current political choices in a world turning toward authoritarianism.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, Zack received the Donald H. Pflueger Local History Award for her book\u00a0<strong>Altadena: Between Wilderness and City\u00a0<\/strong>from the Historical Society of Southern California.
