Heartfelt thanks to Mark and Carol Forbush, who graciously hosted the 20th annual Golden Poppy Awards & Garden Party in their exquisite garden.\u00a0 <\/span>Their warm hospitality created a memorable experience for all.<\/p>\n

It was a perfect day, mild and sunny, but as the afternoon unfolded, the lightest of showers descended upon the gathering, adding a touch of magic to the event. The mingling of raindrops and laughter echoed through the gardens, creating a perfect ending to a truly enchanting day.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the event was a ceremony acknowledging Golden Poppy winners who have created beautiful, sustainable gardens that benefit the community by making their neighborhoods more beautiful.\u00a0 <\/span>Each received a bronze plaque to display among their plantings. The awards served as a testament to their hard work, creativity, and green thumbs.<\/p>\n

On the morning of the following Sunday, a bicycle tour of winning gardens was led by Dorothy Wong of the Altadena Bicycle Club. Forty or so people joined the pack at Triangle Park and rode off into the foggy morning for a joyful ride around Altadena.<\/p>\n

The Golden Poppy Awards<\/h2>\n

After two years online, we celebrated the Golden Poppy Awards in person again on May 22 in the amazing garden of Renata and Talmadge O’Neil.<\/p>\n

Over 230 guests enjoyed amazing weather, caribbean fusion food, wine and drinks and a stunning venue with mountain views. Several generous companies donated prizes to our raffle, which raised funds for the irrigation system at Old Marengo Triangle. Representatives from the offices of State Senator Portantino, State Assemblyman Holden, and Supervisor Barger attended and gave certificates to our winners – in addition to the bronze plaque they can proudly display for the next 2 years.<\/p>\n

Golden Poppy Awards 2021<\/h2>\n

As in 2020, our 2021 winners allowed us to record interviews and videos about their gardens which are available here.<\/p>\n

Chair Sharon Sand introduced the event and Val Zavala conducted short interviews with each winner. Altadena Heritage members were treated to short presentations from Eric Callow, incoming President of the Theodore Payne Foundatio<\/a>n, on California native plants, and Joy Walters, coordinator of CHA CHA<\/a>, about ecologically beneficial garden maintenance.<\/p>\n

Eric Callow also generously provided a $200 gift card from the Theodore Payne Foundation for one lucky attendee to buy some native plants for their garden. Joan Kaplan was the lucky winner.

Their Mediterranean-revival house was designed and built in 1922-3 by noted artist of the Golden Age of Illustration, Frank Brown. It is on the former grounds of the West India Gardens, operated from 1906 to 1920 by the Popenoe family.\u00a0<\/span>

He built his home for entertaining, with a few large rooms and many French doors to facilitate indoor\/outdoor circulation. Mark and Michele have expanded on Brown\u2019s vision during their 32-year occupancy.

Steve Pribyl provided shimmering live music on his uilleann pipes, an Irish folk woodwind related to bagpipes. The usual abundance of food came with wine and bubbly supplied by board member Gail Casburn of the Altadena Ale & Wine House, and beer donated by member Mark Jilg of the Craftsman Brewing Company.<\/span>

The event was held on the Old California-style grounds of Ed Ellis\u2019s home near Millard Canyon, and featured a groaning board of sandwiches, snacks, curry, and desserts. Mark Jilg of Craftsman Brewing Company graciously sponsored and poured his famous handcrafted Poppyfields Ale, and board member Gail Casburn presided over a selection of delicious French wines from her Altadena Ale & Wine House.<\/p>\n

 
\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_text_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.69)” global_colors_info=”{}”]Board member Bill Ellinger gave a brief talk on the history of Mr. Ellis\u2019s property, Casa Roca, built in 1905 by visionary Horace Dobbins. Dobbins\u2019 plan to build an elevated bicycle-way from Pasadena to Los Angeles was thwarted by none other than Henry Huntington, who, smelling competition, got a court injunction to halt construction that he claimed violated his trolley line\u2019s right of way. Casa Roca \u2014 located at 3535 Canyon Ridge Drive \u2014 was as visionary as its original owner, featuring a number of architectural elements that were advanced for their era,\u00a0<\/span>
\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_text_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.69)” global_colors_info=”{}”]including steel-reinforced concrete, a dome for water capture and storage, and solar water heating. Among the visitors to Casa Roca during Dobbins\u2019 tenure was famous aviatrix Pancho Barnes, a family member.<\/p>\n

Board chair Michele Zack presented the Golden Poppy Awards. Three of this year\u2019s four recipients were in attendance and briefly described their gardens to the crowd: Megan Bergkessel and Phil Esra; Jeri Huston and Mark Rizuto, and Denise Rae Johnson. Kevin Otuska was not present to receive his bronze Golden Poppy plaque,

Sustainability chair Michiko Lynch presented AH\u2019s inaugural \u201cBig Tree\u201d awards. Representatives of Waldorf School accepted the award certificate for the Scripps Torrey Pine on its property, and Peter Doms and Brenda Hurst, private owners of the \u201cDuke of Eucs,\u201d accepted on its behalf. The third winner, the Woodbury Moreton Bay Fig, is on the County Sheriff\u2019s property.
