County, and Frank McDonough, botanical information consultant for the L.A. County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hodel\u2019s presentation highlighted the beauty and benefits of trees in urban areas; drought-tolerant, sustainable, low-maintenance landscaping techniques; and how to select trees that are suitable for Altadena\u2019s climate, along with tips for planting, irrigation, feeding and mulching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">McDonough emphasized\u00a0proper pruning methods; the negative consequences of bad pruning; and solutions for trees that have been damaged by poor topping\/trimming, or by area pathologies such as the polyphagous shot hole borer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The presentations were followed by a Q&amp;A session and the announcement of an upcoming contest to identify Altadena\u2019s \u201cBigTrees,\u201d as well as the opportunity \u2014 coordinated by AH \u2014 for members and attendees to receive free tees from Southern California Edison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n<span class=\"et_bloom_bottom_trigger\"><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Altadena&#8217;s Urban Forest: Past, Present &amp; Future Altadena\u2019s Heritage of Abundance includes its trees, from native California scrub oaks, sycamores and certain palms to the eucalyptus, silk, carob and fruit trees introduced later \u2026 and don\u2019t forget our mile-long stretch of giant deodars known as Christmas Tree Lane!
